Movie Theaters in Carefree Arizona

The Town of Carefree’s big-screen digital-sound film buffs are served by two Harkins Theatres multiplexes in North Scottsdale, Arizona—Harkins Scottsdale 101 and Camelview—and by the 18-screen American Multi-Cinema, Inc. (AMC) theater at Desert Ridge in North Phoenix, Arizona.

All three theaters have stadium seating and show both first-run Hollywood studio films and independent films. The Harkins Theatres also show world premiers as well as art and foreign films.

If you’re not familiar with the Harkins chain, Harkins Theatres is a family owned and operated company. Founded in 1933 in Tempe, Arizona, the firm has significantly grown over the years and now entertains moviegoers in five states throughout the West.

Together with Emerging Pictures, Harkins Scottsdale 101 presents the Opera and Ballet in Cinema series that brings the finest—and sometimes live—European opera and ballet conveniently to a theater near you, presented in crystal-clear Hi-Definition digital projection. Harkins Scottsdale 101 also hosts the Phoenix Film Festival and the Scottsdale Film Festival.

Camelview is located in the heart of Scottsdale and specializes in art and independent films. Movies selected for Scottsdale’s annual Jewish Film Festival are shown there, too.

AMC is a national chain that started with three brothers who were traveling through the Midwest in the early 1900s. They settled down in Kansas City, Missouri, where they purchased the Regent Theatre in 1920 and started Durwood Theatres, which one of the brothers grew into a chain of a dozen movie houses and drive-ins. AMC Desert Ridge boasts an IMAX screen and RealD 3D (no 3D-eyeglasses needed).

Closer to Carefree, just down the road in North Scottsdale at the new FCF-Holland Community Center, the Foothills Film Society shows inspiring films with special themes, accompanied by speakers who facilitate learning and lively discussions. The Desert Foothills Library in Carefree’s adjoining Town of Cave Creek also shows films for adults and children.
